This means that either the right or the left side of the piece cannot have a "neighbouring piece". You can combine pieces from different layers, but only if it has at least one side free. Because it can be difficult to get an overview of the pieces on the board, there are numbers in the top right corner that can help you find pairs. Furthermore, there is either a grey or a green marking around the piece, depending on whether you can use it, i.e. whether it has at least one side free or not. The different layers also have slightly different color shades to help you distinguish them from each other. During the game you win Spigos when you remove pieces with a little gold symbol.
