Ever since the dawn of video games, there has been a common assumption that in order to enjoy your favorite game, you'd need to have lots of spare time. However, that's not entirely true because of something called casual games. Okay, but what exactly does the term casual games really mean?
As the name suggests, casual games stands for games that are less demanding, require less time to play and without a real end. Or in other words, casual games are every casual gamer's best friend since they can be played whenever you feel like playing. There's no commitment, no complicated game mechanics and no deep or overly complex storyline.
The main idea is just to enjoy having a quick gaming session, without feeling obligated to commit hours to gaming. And when you take into account the fast-paced lifestyles that we're all so used to these days, people don't have that much free time on their hands. And that's why casual games and casual gamers exist, although core gamers generally don't consider them "real gamers".
Casual Gamer vs Core Gamer - What's The Difference Between The Two?
Casual gamers are people who enjoy gaming every now and then, but without getting really attached to gaming and it's safe to say that they don't have a real passion for gaming. Core gamers on the other hand play games much more often and they generally keep up with the latest gaming news.
Or to put things into perspective, casuals are generally people who occasionally play simple and quick games i.e. Angry Birds. While core gamers play more complex games with an emphasis on narrative. And that's exactly what separates these two types of gamers - casual gamers play just for fun while core gamers take gaming much more serious.
And while we're on the subject - no, core gamers are not the same as hardcore gamers. Core gamers are somewhere between casuals and hardcore ones in terms of how involved in gaming they are. Regardless, hardcore gamers sit at the very top when it comes to players who have a real passion for playing games.
A Quick Look At The Casual Gamers Statistics Across The Globe
According to a recent survey courtesy of Limelight Networks, gamers worldwide spend around 6 hours per week playing games (1). In fact, 20% of the players spend roughly 1 hour (or even less) on playing games each week, while 36% spend anywhere from 1 to 4 hours and 26% of players go hardcore since they play 7 (or more) hours each week.
And logically, this survey also mentions the fact that young people play more. It seems that young folks (18 to 25 years old) like to spend over 7 hours on games per week, while people aged 60+ spend less than 5 hours gaming. Also, it seems like UK gamers are the most hardcore in the world with an average of 7.15 hours of gaming on a weekly basis!
Last but not least, something that might spark some controversy is that men spend more time on gaming than women, according to the same survey. Apparently, the average time men spend on games each week is precisely 6.69 hours versus 5.19 hours for the ladies. And when it comes to hardcore gamers, men win again with 31.2% of guys playing 7+ hours per week, as opposed to 22.2% of women spending 7 hours or more on gaming each week.
There's no doubt that casual games are the go-to games for anyone looking to enjoy some gaming, without feeling forced to spend countless hours on gaming. And with a seemingly endless demand for casual things these days, it does seem like casual games are here to stay.
